Diagnosis (after ten Hove and Kupriyanova 2009). Tube white opaque, with longitudinal keel, subtriangular or triangular in cross-section or with more or less regular transverse ridges. Hyaline granular overlay may be present. Operculum inverse conical with distal chitinous cap. Peduncle circular to rounded triangular in cross-section, about twice as wide as radiole, without wings or pinnules, sometimes separated from ampulla by constriction; inserted at base of left branchial lobe, in front of first radiole or almost midway between branchial lobes. Pseudoperculum absent. Radioles in semi-circles to short pectinate arrangement, with up to 10 radioles per lobe, interradiolar membrane absent; stylodes absent. Branchial eyes absent. Mouth palps absent. Seven or six thoracic chaetigerous segments. Collar trilobed, tonguelets between medial and latero-dorsal lobes absent. Pairs of small, wart-like protuberances of collar chaetiger absent. Thoracic membranes short, ending at chaetiger 2 or 3. Collar chaetae finand-blade, with distal limbate zone and proximal wing not well separated, and limbate. Remaining thoracic chaetae all limbate. Apomatus chaetae absent. Thoracic uncini saw-shaped, with 9 – 12 teeth above flat gouged peg. Triangular depression absent. Abdominal chaetae hollow trumpet-shaped, narrow and smoothly bent, with long lateral tip. Abdominal uncini rasp-shaped, with 9 – 11 teeth in profile, 3 – 4 teeth in a row above gouge shaped peg. Achaetous anterior abdominal zone absent. Long posterior capillary chaetae and posterior glandular pad absent.

Abstract

This study is a revision of the poorly known genus Pseudochitinopoma Zibrowius, 1969 (Annelida, Serpulidae), erected for Hyalopomatopsis occidentalis Bush, 1905 from the West Coast of North America. Subsequently, an unnamed Pseudochitinopoma sp. nov. from the Seychelles (ten Hove 1994) (described herein as P. amirantensis sp. nov.) and P. pavimentata Nishi, 1999 were added to the genus. Ficopomatus capensis Day, 1961 is herein referred to Pseudochitinopoma, based on examination of the type material. Finally, Pseudochitinopoma beneliahuae sp. nov. was described from Western Australia and the Red Sea. Reproductive patterns and phylogenetic affinities of Pseudochitinopoma spp. are discussed.
