The specific name “ batesii ” with – ii is the correct Latin genitive of the form “ Batesius ”, as used by Butler. The correction to “ batesi ” (as sometimes seen in the literature) with – i is an unjustified emendation. Rationale of the synonymy. The original description of Amado & Morales does not contain any meaningful evidence to keep H. nicefori as distinct from H. batesii. The whereabouts of the type specimens of Heterophrynus nicefori are unknown, following a survey conducted in many Colombian potential repositories. However, material from the type locality has been examined (see list above) and deemed conspecific with H. batesii.
