Family Anopsobiidae Verhoeff, 1907

Anobsobiidae can be separated from Henicopidae by the possession of an acute ventrodistal projection on the coxa of the 15th leg and a lack of ocelli. None of the tergites are produced, as they are in Zygethobius . Anopsobiid male gonopods in North America appear stouter than those of henicopids, with shorter terminal filaments. With the exception of species of Buethobius, Catanopsobius and the new genus Speleopsobius, anobsobiids have at least single spurs on the prefemora of the 15th legs, and some genera have additional spurs. The genera have not been grouped into subfamilies or tribes, though the North American anopsobiids, sharing the character of a complete lack of spurs on the legs, likely represent a coherent taxon that should be recognized at least at the tribal level, depending on more thorough study.

Abstract

Speleopsobius weaveri, n. gen., n. sp., is described from lava tubes in southern Idaho, USA. The new taxon, and species of the genera Buethobius Chamberlin, 1911 and its probable synonym Yobius Chamberlin, 1945, are members of the family Anopsobiidae, not previously reported from North America. All known species of Henicopidae and Anopsobiidae from North America north of México are listed and briefly noted, along with all known anopsobiids from the northern hemisphere. Anopsobiella dawidoffi Attems, 1938 (Vietnam) is likely not a member of the family Anopsobiidae.
