Type material. Syntype ♂ (ZMH-A 0000674). PARAGUAY: Apa River (“ Rio Apa ”) [ca. 22 ° 06 ’ S, 58 ° 02 ’ W]. Preservation. 1 jar: Label. Newportia balzanii Silv. ex typis Rio Apa Argentinien Mus. Turin C. VII. 1903. Old type catalogue. Weidner (1960), p. 68, No. 53. Paratype 1 (as balzani). Collection remarks. The specimen was collected by the Italian explorer and zoologist Luigi Balzan (1865 – 1983) and came from the collection of the Museum of Natural History in Turin (Museo Regionale die Scienze Naturali) where additional syntypes are likely preserved. The Rio Apa is located in Paraguay as Silvestri mentioned, not in Argentina (as documented on the label). Current systematic position. Tidops balzanii (Silvestri, 1895); transferred from Newportia by Schileko & Minelli (1998: 293).
