Diagnosis. As for Smithosaurus echzellensis, the only known species.

Etymology. We name this genus in honour of American paleoherpetologist Krister T. Smith for his valuable contributions to vertebrate paleontology and particularly to squamate morphology and evolution; and from Greek σαύρα [saura], lizard.
