Comments. Previously, this species was divided into two separate species: Leptestheria mayeti and L. cortieri (Rogers 2020). Another species, L. heterochaeta Daday, 1923, is considered a possible junior synonym of L. mayeti according to Rogers (2020). The distribution of L. mayeti in Algeria, extending into the Central Sahara, contrasts with its more northerly distribution in Tunisia (Marrone et al. 2016).
