Bocage (1867 a) reported several specimens of Pachydactylus ocellatus collected by Anchieta in Benguela. An adult male was presented to the British Museum in the same year (NHMA /DF/ZOO/200/1/195) and was later cited by Boulenger (1885 a). Pachydactylus punctatus has long been recognized as a species complex with several distinct lineages occurring in Angola (Marques et al. 2018).
