Global Dataset of Freshwater Invasive and Alien Species

checklist

FRIAS (Freshwater Invasive and Alien Species) dataset is a global compilation of more than 3,800 freshwater non-native species derived from 94 online data sources.

This species data information was obtained through a multi-step systematic screening process combining automated extraction in R (v4.5.0), web scraping (HTML, APIs and scientific literature) and manual downloading.

These data were harmonized into a single species master list using a semi-automated workflow that standardized key variables across sources, including taxonomy (based on GBIF), feeding group, introduction pathways, native and recipient ranges, establishment status, ecological impact (EICAT), year of first record, and affected taxa. This integrative approach provides a consistent framework for analyzing global patterns of freshwater biological invasions.
