SEM The spherical egg (cyst) of A. salina measured ca 190 µm in diameter (̄ x = 188.0 ± 8.0 μm). The smooth outer surface was devoid of any ornamentation but did show a small number of randomly distributed bumps and indentations (Figure 3 a, b). TEM Not performed in this study. Measurements estimated from studies by Morris and Afzelius (1967), Mazzini (1978) and Sugumar and Munuswamy (2006) showed an average shell thickness of 7.50 ± 0.04 µm (SD). AFM Topography of the outer shell displayed comparable morphologies to those visualised with SEM, but with more texture observed under AFM (Figure 3 c). Small bumps ranging in size from 0.3 to 1.1 µm were present on the surface. An example force – distance curve that displays how Young ̾ s modulus values were collected for a single spot on one egg is shown in Figure 3 d. The average Young ̾ s modulus ranged from 17.40 to 22.51 MPa with a mean of 20.93 ± 1.57 MPa (SD) (Table 1). Hardness values ranged from 1.90 × 10 − 2 GPa to 2.43 × 10 − 2 GPa with a mean hardness of 2.20 × 10 − 2 GPa ± 1.67 × 10 − 3 GPa (SD) (Table 2).

Mapping the Geographic Distribution of Large Branchiopods in Algeria and a checklist update
Comments. Along with the potential occurrence of A. tunisiana (Bowen & Sterling, 1978), the invasive A. franciscana was documented in neighboring Tunisia by Ben Naceur et al. (2010) and Morocco (Amat et al. 2005). However, there is a knowledge gap regarding the putative distribution of these two Artemia species in Algeria. In the broader Maghreb region, A. salina has been observed exclusively in semiarid to hyperarid regions (Thiéry 1987; Marrone et al. 2016; this study). This pattern suggests that A. salina does not occur in the humid and subhumid regions of the Maghreb. The reasons for this restricted distribution require further investigation.

    GBIF Backbone Taxonomy

    GBIF Backbone Taxonomy

    checklist

The GBIF Backbone Taxonomy is a single, synthetic management classification with the goal of covering all names GBIF is dealing with. It's the taxonomic backbone that allows GBIF to integrate name based information from different resources, no matter if these are occurrence datasets, species pages, names from nomenclators or external sources like EOL, Genbank or IUCN. This backbone allows taxonomic search, browse and reporting operations across all those resources in a consistent way and to provide means to crosswalk names from one source to another.

It is updated regulary through an automated process in which the Catalogue of Life acts as a starting point also providing the complete higher classification above families. Additional scientific names only found in other authoritative nomenclatural and taxonomic datasets are then merged into the tree, thus extending the original catalogue and broadening the backbones name coverage. The GBIF Backbone taxonomy also includes identifiers for Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) drawn from the barcoding resources iBOL and UNITE.

International Barcode of Life project (iBOL), Barcode Index Numbers (BINs). BINs are connected to a taxon name and its classification by taking into account all names applied to the BIN and picking names with at least 80% consensus. If there is no consensus of name at the species level, the selection process is repeated moving up the major Linnaean ranks until consensus is achieved.

UNITE - Unified system for the DNA based fungal species, Species Hypotheses (SHs). SHs are connected to a taxon name and its classification based on the determination of the RefS (reference sequence) if present or the RepS (representative sequence). In the latter case, if there is no match in the UNITE taxonomy, the lowest rank with 100% consensus within the SH will be used.

The GBIF Backbone Taxonomy is available for download at https://hosted-datasets.gbif.org/datasets/backbone/ in different formats together with an archive of all previous versions.
