Cepheidae

Vorkommen: Zwei Arten in voellig verschiedenen Strata des Buchenwaldes, Cepheus dentatus (MICHAEL, 1888), regelmaessig und haeufig in der Bodenstreu, Ommatocepheus ocellatus (MICHAEL, 1882), regelmaessig, aber spaerlich auf der Rinde im Kronenbereich der Baeume, meist oberhalb 20 m; die Tiere einiger weniger Funde in Barberfallen stammen wahrscheinlich von herabgefallenen Aesten und damit ebenfalls aus dem Kronenbereich.

Diagnose: NG relativ breit, oft mit runden Schultervorspruengen; 9 - 10 ng meist ± randstaendig; mit deutlichen Lam und Csp; 5 - 10 g, 1 ag, 3 ad, 2 an; Nymphen eupherederm: mit Skalps, die meist bizarre Borsten tragen.

Remark: Cepheidae Berlese, 1896, the commonly used name for this oribatid mite family, is a junior homonym of Cepheidae Agassiz, 1862 (Cnidaria). A proposal to establish a replacement name for Cepheidae Berlese has been submitted to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (Halliday & Norton 2019).
